The Curse of PowerPoint

PowerPoint presentations dominate knowledge transfer in both business and higher-academic communities. Remarkably, PowerPoint is a poor tool for knowledge transfer, it is expensive to create, one dimensional, and incorporates no research backed principles for how to transfer knowledge effectively.

PowerPoint presentations progress at a single pace, leaving a good portion of the workers behind, and others bored.

PowerPoint does not equip authors to clearly identify the salient facts that must be mastered by the audience.

PowerPoint does not automatically reinforce the salient facts.

PowerPoint does not profile users to know who needs further review and who can move on. As a result of these shortcomings, PowerPoint is not an effective tool for knowledge transfer. Managers need a reliable mechanism to understand what workers know, don’t know, and what they specifically need to master to be properly equipped for their jobs. In a world dominated by PowerPoint, workers attempting to advance and be more effective are left on their own to develop ad-hoc systems to improve their knowledge. It is time to move beyond PowerPoint and embrace a true Knowledge Transfer System (RKS).
